Unscored // Big Fkn Aorta Single Review

Melbourne/Naarm is no stranger to loud and dirty rock. The crunch of a distorted guitar and grunge vocals blaring throughout an inner-city pub is a local past time at this point. Naarm’s own four-piece outfit Unscored add their take to the legacy of hard rock within the local scene. Big Fkn Aorta is the title of the single and while it holds all the conventions we love of the genre, Unscored showcase their distinct flare and personality to make this a worthy addition to the annals of Melbourne/Naarm hard rock.

The Immediate thump of that deep low-end bass partnered with the high end of post punk like dissonance in the guitar puts the listener on edge. From that point Unscored have you intrigued does the track blow up into a crescendo of feedback and screeched vocals? While that may seem like the obvious approach, the band take it down a notch with a more subdued verse. The vocal lines weaving seamlessly through the sparse mix, taking centre stage. The vocal movement is like the 90’s grunge wave, however the mixing of the track modernises the sound.

The vocal delivery stays solemn when the chorus hits, almost playfully opposing the return of the dissonant guitars. The constraint to not make the vocals add intensity is a point of intrigue and allows listeners to focus in more on the lyrical refrain that repeats. Only in small sections to they rise to screams which makes the eventual rise far more satisfying.

Unscored provided us with an extremely fun and intriguing listen.
