Our Friends in Uncle Umma have released their new single Submarine. This isn’t the first time we’ve covered (or been impressed with) Uncle Umma’s music. If you want to read our thoughts on their EP Naked Faces you can read them here.
Naked Faces was a fun 4 track (plus a live recording) EP that displayed the bands’ ability to write a more laid-back take on psychedelic rock with infectious grooves subtlety implemented throughout. With Submarine Uncle Umma steers even more into the groove. The added backing percussion and walking bass line gives the single a new added element of Dub. The bounce that comes from Dub propels a dance feel further into the spotlight, making Submarine a certified hit in a live setting.
While the single follows more in the direction of dance the psychedelic rock components of Uncle Umma’s sound is still prominent. The lead guitar line shines in the mix as it acts as the leading melody with the strong rhythmic background. This melody reminisces of other bands within Australia that blend groove and Psych Rock. Babe Rainbow comes to mind as the line echoes out, however where Uncle Umma differentiates themselves is the heightened energy in the surrounding instruments. Submarine is a non-stop experience of sounds that explodes in the tracks back half. A perfect release of liveliness that ends the three minutes with a perfectly sequenced climax
An excellent follow up to an EP that we loved
