It’s always been a pleasure for the Couchdog Family to listen to the first offerings of an artist so today we are excited to continue this special privilege of ours by reviewing Starlight, the debut single of regional Victorian folk artist, Lune Ranger.
Now, Lune Ranger may be a new name for our city’s music scene, but the name Levi Smith is not. For the past 8 years Levi had been fronting the dream-rock act of Loose Bricks. Now as the band have gone on a temporary hiatus, the moniker of Lune Ranger marks a new chapter of Levi’s musical journey as this solo project sees the man showcasing his singer/songwriter prowess by taking the folk genre for a spin.
The vocals and introspective lyricism of this track perfectly come hand in hand. Levi’s breathy singing style conveys a conflicting tone that’s both sombre and hopeful, creating an immensely engaging listening experience.
A massive takeaway for me was how this track places its heart-on-sleeve lyricism at the forefront while simultaneously providing a rich and layered soundscape. Beginning with gentle guitar play, Starlight progressively becomes more intense in both instrumentals and emotion; we reach a climactic harmonic chorus which is then followed by a tasteful electric guitar solo that, altogether, ignites a sensational feeling of wonder before the track gently drifts back to the ground with the familiar acoustics and the distant chirping of crickets.
Overall, the combination of intimate vocals, gripping lyricism and intricate instrumental play displayed on Starlight leaves us keen to see what comes next from the works of Lune Ranger.
