Once in a while a band you keep tabs on releases a track that really catches your eye. A statement of intention if you will. A statement that the artist's sonic output has reached a new level and their craft of songwriting has been elevated. This is the case here with our good friends in GRAZER and their new single Without You. For those unaware (you are missing out if so), GRAZER is a band that stands on a unique hill within the Melbourne/Naarm music scene with their effortless fusion between Shoegaze, Grunge and Dream Pop. While Without You shares a similar sound with the bands previous work, it stands as the bands strongest track to date.
There is a driving indie rock inspired drum beat that is reminiscent of the early to mid 2000’s Indie renaissance that gives the track a lot of energy. An energy that conflicts with the atmospheric and textured vocal layering that acts almost as a soundscape. The blend of a progressive beat and bass-line and the wave of reverb given to us by the melodic aspect of Without You provides listeners with a song that makes us want to tap our feet along and cry all at once. A feat that not many songwriters can accomplish. There are a number of extremely emotive guitar melodies that work as counters to the haunting vocals that are ever present within the track. While a very traditional structured and formatted song, Without You offers up multiple instrumental elements to get mesmerised by. Whether it be the aforementioned guitar lines, layered vocals or even the atmosphere of the production, listeners will come away from the new single with a sonic impression that will stick with them long past the 3 minutes and 37 second duration.
