The great arts scene within our city of Melbourne/Naarm is upheld by its array of iconic venues. The backbone of the music we go out and love to see any given night. From the conventional pubs to the more versatile spaces that allow a more varied exhibition of local artists. Whether it is Northside, Inner City or all the way down The Peninsula, every part of our city has local watering holes that have key memories attached to them.
Frankie Upstairs is a relatively new addition to the great venues of the city. Located on Southbank, the venue has been running monthly boutique styled events. While not an area well known for music venues Frankie Upstairs looks to provide a more centralised space within the city to showcase great art (audio and visual alike). A short walk from Flinders Street station can take you to intimate events ran by enthusiastic curators who have thus far successfully ran some engaging affairs. Being held within a yoga studio creates a unique experience, taking attendees out of the typical bar scene into a gentler space.

The acts that have performed there thus far lean into the acoustic side (including a favourite of our Lady Fern, check out or review of his latest single here). However, with such a bare space this allows a lot of room for experimentation visually from those who wish to run an event there. With plenty of opportunities to display visual art Frankie Upstairs is a venue that encourages more cohesion between art forms. The latest event within the studio introduced the serving of alcohol. Partnering with the local business Sip’er (a female led online bottle shop) Frankie Upstairs demonstrates their commitment to the boutique by inviting diverse and independently run businesses into their space.
As Frankie Upstairs continues to grow their catalogue of events the artistic expression that takes place within the yoga studio is sure to expand. Be sure to take some time and pop by. Easy location to reach with a great team behind the scenes.
